Hiya Dima,

Good to see you are doing well these days. I heard that you were working at Microsoft from Mattie.

But back to the article. I found that Fedora 9 has a similar experience to installing Ubuntu. It detected and appropriately set up my sound and wifi cards. Video defaulted to the nv driver, but that was to be expected for my nvidia card. X was properly configured. Overall an enjoyable experience. Though I can definitely give Ubuntu the package edge. At least 5 times more packages available then Fedora 9. But there are additional repositories for missing packages like Livan.org.

In short, Fedora 9 is an awesome install though I still prefer BSD’s and Gentoo’s Ports systems.

Our A105’s battery also worked 6 hours brand new, now that
it was in storage a year it wont hold more than 2 hours real charge in it. (Put away, taken apart). I think this is an issue overall with Toshiba batteries as they have recognized particular other models and have a battery exchange program, for those others. (total laptop age is now about 2 years old).

Hi Dan, thanks for the tip. I’ll check it out. Currently I am using OneNote. It is very flexible in terms of data input — its the closest thing to pen and paper I’ve seen in software. I can also do text searches through graphics, hyperlink things etc. I also use FreeMind for brainstorming. But none of these tools do the job exactly the way I’d like them to. I think using them is much more efficient then project management tools, because I find those to be too structured. Even most GTD software out there is way to structured. I need something that is as flexible as pen and paper, but done in software.

I making a list of features and thinking about creating my own. It would need to have a cloud component, something I can push to, that other devices can sync with. I don’t think making it web-based is a good idea because web-based data input is very limited, and because you have to be connected to use it.

I don’t understand the religiosity involved with what are just merely tools that are used to realize a design.

There are reasons why someone would choose CakePHP and why someone would choose Rails.

Besides, since CakePHP is a close clone of Rails if you know one then you pretty much know the other.

Suggested reading: Patterns of Enterprise Architectures by Fowler. It gives a coverage of “architectures” and “patterns” without specifying any particular language.

I choose CakePHP over ROR because PHP has the MySQL interface as an integral part of the language. I couldn’t get ROR to access MySQL on my Linux+Apache machine because the MySQL interface comes from another source than the Ruby. Ruby is a nice language, but until Ruby has the MySQL interface built-in, I’ll stick to PHP.

RoR is not nearly as complicated/expensive to host now as it was a couple of years ago. One of the easiest ways to run Ror is to use Litespeed (www.litespeedtech.com) on a cheap VPS like Slicehost. Their ruby gem makes running RoR apps a piece of cake (pun intended) :)

I tested this camera for a client. I didn’t have the light running for more than 15 minutes. The battery lasted approximately 6 hours before recharging. The LCD, however, had a few dead pixels - never saw this before. Tried returning for exchange and had to put up quite a fight. Anyone else seen this? http://www.batteryfast.co.uk

I worked php most times but in recent projects i’ve done cakephp due to client specs, i noticed it very slow at times but i never tried ruby so not sure if its good for very processing intensive large apps
